Meet the team | A couple with Chris
Our Workshop Controller, Chris Bain, is one of the best in the business and with 30 years of Volvo experience under his belt, there is not a car that goes unnoticed by him when it comes through our service centre. He knows exactly the best ways to ensure your car flows through our service & parts team with clockwork precision.
With 3 decades of experience, we sat him down for a couple of questions to find out what makes him tick and talk shop about all things Volvo from someone who knows the brand inside out.
1. How long have you worked with Volvo and how have you progressed?
I’ve been with Volvo for 30 years and I couldn’t possibly think about working with any other automotive brand. I started my mechanical technician’s apprenticeship in Victoria as soon as I left high school before moving up to Queensland and working with the Albion Car Centre, Leo Muller Volvo, AP Eagers and now with Volvo Cars Brisbane North.
I’ve held several roles over the years including Technician, Foreman, Parts Interpreter, and now Workshop Controller where I have formed a leadership team with our fantastic & highly skilled Master Technicians.
2. When did your love affair with Volvo start & why?
My parents have always driven Volvos and I'm sure that being in and around them influenced me from an early age. They actually still love the product to this day and are pretty one-eyed on the subject of which is the best car to drive. And from my point of view, Volvo consistently produces cars that have great quality, not only to look, touch & feel but also has exceptional engineering to match.
3. What do you like (or love) about working in the automotive industry?
Every day is different, and I love working with the workshop team to ensure the entire service flows well. It is also an exciting industry to be a part of as we transition into the electric age, there is always something new to learn.
4. What’s been the proudest moment in your auto career?
My proudest moment was when I competed and won the Volvo Vista competition for Australia / NZ as a team. I looked after the parts component and my colleague Dan was the technician. As this was an international award, we travelled to Sweden to compete with the world’s best. This was most definitely a highlight.
5. What’s something that customers should be doing regularly to keep their Volvo in tip-top condition?
Owners should always be looking to keep on top of their regular servicing & maintenance every 15000km or 12months, ensure that their tyres are rotated every 7500km and always have the latest software installed for their car.
And when customers service with us, they have the benefit of having a team full of experience here with me. With Volvo trained technicians and 3 Master Technicians with almost a century of experience between them all plus we always have access to the latest updates, some other centres may not have.
6. Where in the world would you like to take a Volvo on a recovery roadtrip & Why?
I’d love to take the Coast road back to Victoria, back to where I’m from. I'd love to see my parents there as with all that has been going on I just haven’t had the chance to visit them in over a year.
7. What’s your favourite Roadtrip song?
I thought long and hard about this, but the right answer is whatever my wife wants to listen to :-) …. But I also enjoy listening to any song that takes me back, and reminds me of travelling, being overseas in places like New York or London etc.
8. What’s your biggest passion outside Volvo?
My family is always my number 1. I have a 9 year old son, so outside of work enjoy spending time with him and being outdoors & active like taking the family bike riding and camping etc.
9. What’s your favourite dream Volvo & Why?
The new Volvo XC60 R-design is my favourite as it’s so versatile, it’s great for the city commute but it’s also at home on the campground as well.
10. What Volvo option is something that a Volvo owner can’t live without?
A towbar and roof rack is great for every Volvo owner as it extends the functionality of their car.
11. What’s something people wouldn’t guess about you?
I actually commute 200km a day to come to work as I enjoy working with the team that’s been built at Volvo Cars Brisbane North. Every morning I join the early sea of fluro on the commute, turn NOVA up on the radio and enjoy the drive down on the highway into the city ready to jump into the day.
